Definition

An organized group of persons associated together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes. Societies are usually registered for the advancement of charitable activities like sports, music, culture, religion, art, education, etc.



Purpose of Society Registration:

A society registration can be done for the development of fine arts, science, or literature or else for diffusion of purposeful knowledge or charitable purposes of political education. According to section 20 of Society Act, 1860, a society registration can be done for following purposes:

  1. Promotion of fine arts
  2. Diffusion of political education
  3. Grant of charitable assistance
  4. Promotion of science and literature
  5. Creation of military orphan funds
  6. Maintenance or foundation of galleries or public museum
  7. Maintenance or foundation of reading rooms or libraries
  8. Promotion or diffusion or instruction of useful knowledge.

Following are the documents required for the Society Registration in India:

  1. PAN card of all proposed members,
  2. The Residence Proof of all the proposed members,
  3. Preparation of Memorandum of Association,
  4. Preparation of Article of Association
  5. A covering letter mentioning the objective or the purpose for which the society
  6. A list of all the members
  7. A declaration has to be given by the president of the proposed society

Procedure and Steps Taken for registration of Society:

  • Step 1 - Choose an appropriate name for Society
  • Step 2 - Drafting of Memorandum of Association (MOA) and rules & regulations of proposed trust.
  • Step 3 - Drafting of all other required documents.
  • Step 4 - Submit the docs with the registrar of society of state
  • Step 5 - Verification of documents / forms by Registrar
  • Step 6 - Issue of Certificate of registration of trust
